Animals in Nursing Homes – Natural Therapy for Body and Soul

Dogs and cats in care homes improve the health and well-being of seniors. Find out why the presence of animals is the best therapy and how to implement it safely.

Animal-Assisted Therapy – what is it?

More and more often in nursing homes you can meet dogs and cats that are not only companions but also part of therapy. Such sessions are called animal-assisted therapy. These are specially planned meetings in which the presence of animals helps seniors improve their mental, emotional, and physical health. In Poland, the terms dog therapy or cat therapy are often used, depending on whether a dog or a cat participates in the sessions.

Main benefits for seniors

Safety and hygiene

To ensure the therapy is completely safe, animals must be carefully selected – they should be gentle, healthy, and regularly examined by a veterinarian. Hygiene procedures such as washing hands before and after contact are also important. Possible allergies and residents’ fears should be taken into account as well.

How to implement the program in a care home?

  1. Define goals: e.g. reducing loneliness, promoting physical activity.
  2. Cooperate with experts: certified therapists and trained animals.
  3. Pilot sessions: short meetings in small groups.
  4. Regularity: sessions once or twice a week.
  5. Evaluate results: observe changes in seniors’ well-being and activity.
Dogs or cats?

Dogs are great for group and activation sessions, as they easily make contact and encourage movement. Cats are better suited for individual work, bringing calm and relaxation.

Summary

The presence of dogs and cats in nursing homes is not only a source of joy but also an effective form of therapy. Animal-assisted therapy supports physical and mental health, and a well-planned program can become an important part of daily senior care.
