How to Prepare for Your First Assignment as a Caregiver?

Your first assignment as a senior caregiver in Germany is a big experience. Proper preparation helps avoid stress and start work confidently.

Documents and formalities

Before departure, make sure you have: a valid ID or passport, a signed contract with the agency, the A1 document confirming social insurance, and an EHIC card or private health insurance.

What to pack

Besides clothes for the entire stay: comfortable indoor shoes, personal medications, chargers, and a translator app on your phone.

Language preparation

Even basic German is extremely helpful. Learn key phrases: greetings, asking about the senior’s wellbeing, meal names, body parts, medications, and daily care tools.

First day with the family

Be open and patient. Ask about the senior’s daily routine, habits, food allergies, and medications. Get important phone numbers: doctor, pharmacy, agency coordinator.

Agency support

A good agency provides a coordinator available by phone, help with conflicts, and the option to change assignments if conditions don’t match the contract.
