Deciding to place a loved one in a care home is one of the most difficult moments in a family’s life. We want to be sure that our senior will be in good hands. But how do you tell a truly good facility from one that merely looks good in photographs?
Don’t judge a care home solely by its décor. Pay attention to the atmosphere – do the residents look well cared for and content? Does the staff treat them with respect and patience? A good care home is one where you can feel warmth and genuine care, not the sterile coldness of an institution.
Prepare a list of questions before your visit. Ask about the staff-to-resident ratio, availability of a doctor and nurse, how emergencies are handled, and whether individual dietary needs and personal preferences can be accommodated. A good facility won’t shy away from answering – on the contrary, they’ll be happy to show you how things work.
Look for reviews online, but take them with a pinch of salt. The most valuable recommendations come from families with direct experience of the facility. It’s also worth asking your family doctor or social worker – they often know local care homes inside out.
Finally – don’t ignore your gut feeling. If something feels off after a visit, even if you can’t quite put your finger on it, keep looking. Choosing a care home is a decision you need to feel at peace with – both you and your loved one.
