In Europe, palliative care takes various forms: from residential hospices and hospital wards to home-based palliative care teams. Germany operates the SAPV system providing specialized care at home. In Poland, home hospices are covered by public health insurance. Many countries are also developing hospice volunteering programs.
Palliative care also includes support for the patient’s loved ones. Families receive psychological help, nursing guidance, and bereavement support. Support groups and family therapy help cope with the emotions accompanying a loved one’s illness.
The first step is to discuss palliative care options with the treating physician. It is worth contacting a local hospice or palliative care center. Non-governmental organizations offer free counseling and help with organizing care. Do not delay seeking support — the sooner, the better for the patient and family.
