Senior Falls — Prevention and First Aid

Falls are one of the most serious health threats for elderly people. One in three seniors over sixty-five experiences a fall at least once a year. Consequences can be severe — from bone fractures to loss of independence. Effective prevention and knowledge of first aid can save a senior’s health and life.

Most common causes of falls

The main causes of senior falls include balance disorders, muscle weakness, vision problems, and medication side effects. Wet floors, poorly lit corridors, loose rugs, and thresholds pose additional hazards at home. Orthostatic hypotension, a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing, is a common cause of dizziness and falls.

Exercises preventing falls

Regular balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls by up to forty percent. Tai chi and yoga are particularly recommended for seniors due to their gentle nature and positive impact on balance. Leg muscle strengthening exercises improve gait stability. Even daily standing from a chair without using hands is an effective strength and balance workout.

Safe home environment

Eliminating hazards at home is a key element of fall prevention. Installing grab bars in the bathroom and near stairs provides additional support. Proper footwear with non-slip soles reduces the risk of slipping. Regular eye checkups and adjusting glasses help avoid obstacles. Medication review with a pharmacist can eliminate preparations causing dizziness.

First aid after a fall

After a senior falls, the most important thing is to stay calm and assess the situation. Do not lift the person immediately — check if there are any fractures. Hip pain or inability to move a limb may indicate a hip fracture requiring urgent medical attention. If the senior is conscious and not in severe pain, help them sit up and then slowly stand.

After a fall — next steps

Even if the fall did not cause visible injuries, it is worth consulting a doctor. Symptoms of internal injuries may appear only after several hours. A doctor should assess the cause of the fall and implement appropriate prevention. Fear of another fall is natural but should not lead to giving up physical activity, which is the best protection against future falls.
