For elderly or disabled people, a wheelchair is not just a means of transport but also a symbol of independence and quality of life.
It allows for greater mobility, participation in daily activities, and contact with loved ones.
In Poland, access to a wheelchair can be obtained in several ways – through reimbursement from the NFZ (National Health Fund) or via social and charitable organizations.
Anyone with limited mobility is entitled to reimbursement if a specialist doctor issues the necessary prescription.
Typically, such prescriptions are provided by rehabilitation doctors, orthopedists, neurologists, or general practitioners.
1. A doctor issues a prescription for a wheelchair.
2. The prescription must be confirmed by the local NFZ office (either online or in person).
3. The patient can then choose a wheelchair from a medical supply store that has a contract with the NFZ.
4. The NFZ covers part or all of the costs, depending on the type of wheelchair.
If the person does not qualify for NFZ reimbursement or needs additional equipment, they can apply for help at their local Social Welfare Center.
These centers often cooperate with foundations and organizations that provide wheelchairs free of charge or on a rental basis.
In Poland, many foundations such as the Avalon Foundation, the Foundation for People with Disabilities, or Caritas offer assistance in obtaining a wheelchair.
Some also help with funding or delivering the equipment directly to the patient’s home.
Local medical equipment rental services are becoming increasingly popular.
They are a great option for people who need a wheelchair only temporarily – for example, after surgery or during rehabilitation.
Renting is much cheaper than buying, and the equipment is regularly serviced and disinfected.
Getting a wheelchair in Poland doesn’t have to be difficult.
Thanks to the support of the NFZ, Social Welfare Centers, foundations, and rental services, every senior or caregiver can find a suitable solution.
